Actually there is a decline in service quality. In the form of lame computer hardware, customer's being confused because they are stupid and try shoving cash in the register before they push "pay now" and then "Pay Cash". Not to mention that every grocer uses a different program to run the registers, so the population never learns one system. And it requires at least one cashier to be trained on the program for every six self scan registers.

I would know, I work at a grocery store.
